Rotherham is a market town in South Yorkshire, sitting at the meeting point of the rivers Rother and Don. The town's name comes directly from the River Rother, and people have lived and worked here since well before the Roman occupation, when iron was first being produced in the area.
For centuries, life in Rotherham revolved around farming, glass-making and flour milling. That changed in the late 1700s, when coal seams discovered close to the town turned Rotherham into one of the engines of the Industrial Revolution. The Walker family built an iron empire here in the 18th century, casting cannons for HMS Victory and producing cast-iron bridges that were exported around the world. By the 19th century, Rotherham was a major steel-making town, and the Effingham Ironworks β later Yates, Haywood & Co β opened in 1820 to meet rising demand.
The town's rivers and canals were just as important. The Don was made navigable to Sheffield, connecting Rotherham to the Aire, the Stainforth and Keadby, the Dearne and Dove, and the Barnsley canals β and through them to the manufacturing districts of Yorkshire and Lancashire. The arrival of the railway in 1838 cemented Rotherham's role as a hub of British industry.
Today Rotherham forms one of four metropolitan boroughs in South Yorkshire, with a population of around 276,000. It's a town that still values practical, hands-on skill β and that's exactly the spirit we try to bring to every job we take on.
