About North Wingfield

A short history of North Wingfield.

North Wingfield is a Derbyshire village south of Chesterfield, with a 12th-century parish church (St Lawrence) that remains the heart of the village. Like much of the Derbyshire coalfield, North Wingfield was a mining community β€” Williamthorpe Colliery operated nearby from 1894 to 1970, and Holmewood Colliery from 1880 to 1968. Housing built for the colliery workforce still defines the village's residential character.

North Wingfield today has around 7,000 residents combined with neighbouring Holmewood and Pilsley. Housing is mostly miners' terraces, inter-war semis and modern infill, with an active high street and good road links via the A6175 to Chesterfield.
