A short history of Wickersley.
Wickersley is a large village on the eastern edge of Rotherham that grew steadily through the 20th century from a hamlet to a thriving suburb. The village is best known for Wickersley sandstone, quarried locally for centuries and used for grindstones (sent worldwide from Sheffield), kerb stones and building material across South Yorkshire. The old quarries are now woodland walks at Wickersley Wood Local Nature Reserve.
Today Wickersley has around 11,000 residents and is widely regarded as one of the borough's most desirable areas, with strong schools, an active high street and proximity to both Rotherham and the M18. Housing is mostly post-war semi-detached and detached, with substantial modern developments around the village edges towards Bramley and Sunnyside.
