About Handsworth

A short history of Handsworth.

Handsworth is a hilltop suburb in eastern Sheffield with mediaeval origins β€” the 12th-century parish church of St Mary still stands, and the village was a separate township until absorbed into Sheffield in 1921. Handsworth was historically known for its quarries, supplying stone for many of Sheffield's Victorian buildings, and later for the engineering works that grew up around the area in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Handsworth today has around 13,000 residents combined with neighbouring areas. Housing is a mix of stone-built Victorian terraces in the older streets, inter-war semis, and substantial post-war estates spreading down towards Woodhouse and Aston. The Sheffield Supertram terminates at Halfway, just south of Handsworth.
