A short history of Aughton.
Aughton sits on the southern edge of Rotherham borough, immediately adjacent to Aston (with which it's often paired as 'Aston-cum-Aughton' for civil purposes). The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book and the parish church of All Saints retains some Norman fabric. Aughton remained largely agricultural until the post-war period, when residential expansion linked it almost continuously with Aston and Swallownest.
Modern Aughton has around 2,500 residents within a wider parish of 13,000 covering Aston and Swallownest. Housing is dominated by post-war and modern estates, with the older village cottages clustered around the church. The M1 (junction 31) is a couple of minutes away.
