About Tibshelf

A short history of Tibshelf.

Tibshelf is a former mining village in north-east Derbyshire, between Alfreton and Bolsover. The village's 14th-century parish church of St John the Baptist has a striking spire that's a landmark across the surrounding countryside. Tibshelf was a significant coal-mining centre from the late 18th century until the closure of Tibshelf Colliery in 1958, and Britain's first commercial inland oil well was sunk in the village in 1919, producing oil until 1945.

Tibshelf today has around 4,500 residents. Housing combines older village cottages, miners' terraces and post-war estates, with modern infill along the edges. The village sits on the M1 corridor and is well-positioned for tradespeople covering both north Derbyshire and southern South Yorkshire.
