A short history of Matlock.
Matlock is the county town of Derbyshire and the gateway to the Peak District. The town grew rapidly in the 19th century around the famous hydropathic spas β Smedley's Hydro (now the County Council offices) was once the largest hydro establishment in England. The neighbouring village of Matlock Bath, with its dramatic limestone cliffs above the Derwent, has been a tourist destination since Lord Byron praised its scenery in the early 19th century.
Matlock today has around 9,500 residents and is the administrative centre for Derbyshire Dales District. Housing ranges from grand Victorian villas built for the spa visitors to substantial modern estates extending up the surrounding hillsides. The Heights of Abraham cable car and the Derwent Valley Heritage Way pass through the town.
