A short history of Ripley.
Ripley is a Derbyshire market town that grew rapidly through coal and iron from the late 18th century onwards. The Butterley Company, established in 1790, was for over a century one of the largest iron-makers in England, supplying ironwork for projects as diverse as St Pancras Station roof and the Spinnaker Tower. The town received its market charter in 1251 and the market still trades.
Ripley today has around 21,000 residents. Housing combines a Victorian industrial core with substantial post-war estates and modern detached developments. The town sits on the A38 / A610 corridor with good links to Derby, the M1 (junction 28) and the A610 west towards Heanor.
