About Rawmarsh

A short history of Rawmarsh.

Rawmarsh is a former mining town just north of Rotherham, sitting on the hill above the Don. The collieries β€” Aldwarke Main, Roundwood and Warren House Pit β€” employed thousands during the 19th and 20th centuries, and Rawmarsh remained a mining community until the 1980s closures. The town received its market charter in the 14th century, and the parish church of St Mary the Virgin has Norman origins.

Rawmarsh today has around 19,000 residents in a town that retains a strong sense of community. Housing is mostly Victorian and Edwardian terraces in the older streets, large inter-war council estates at Monkwood and Greasbrough Road, and newer infill developments. The town adjoins Rotherham almost seamlessly to the south.
