A short history of Eckington.
Eckington is a substantial Derbyshire village just over the South Yorkshire border. Its parish church of St Peter and St Paul has Norman foundations and a striking spire, and the village was historically known for sickle and scythe-making β Mosborough and Eckington supplied the tool to much of agricultural England in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Eckington Sickle Works, established in the 1700s, was one of the largest in the country.
Eckington today has around 12,000 residents. Housing combines older village cottages around the church and high street with substantial inter-war and modern estate developments. The village is well-served by buses to both Sheffield and Chesterfield, and sits at the gateway to the Moss Valley Local Nature Reserve.
