About Clowne

A short history of Clowne.

Clowne is a Derbyshire town between Bolsover and Worksop. The parish church of St John the Baptist has Norman origins β€” its tympanum carving is one of the finest pieces of Romanesque sculpture in Derbyshire. Clowne grew through coal in the 19th century, with Southgate Colliery and the surrounding pits providing employment until closures in the 1980s and 1990s. The town also sits at the edge of the limestone country that runs into the Peak District.

Modern Clowne has around 7,500 residents. Housing combines older village cottages and miners' terraces with substantial post-war estates and modern detached developments. The town has retained a busy market and high street, and benefits from good links to both the M1 (junction 30) and the A619 across to Worksop.
