A short history of Cadeby.
Cadeby is a tiny village a few miles south-west of Doncaster, perhaps best known historically for the Cadeby Main Colliery disaster of 1912, in which 88 men lost their lives in two successive explosions β one of the worst mining disasters in South Yorkshire's history. The colliery itself closed in 1986. The village has Norman origins and the small parish church of St John the Evangelist contains 12th-century fabric.
Cadeby today has fewer than 300 residents in housing dominated by older cottages, miners' terraces from the colliery era, and a small amount of modern infill. The village retains a distinctly rural character and sits close to Conisbrough Castle and the Don gorge.
