A short history of Bolsover.
Bolsover is a hilltop town crowned by Bolsover Castle β a striking Jacobean fantasy palace built by the Cavendish family in the early 17th century on the site of an earlier Norman fortress. The castle's Riding House is one of the earliest surviving examples in England. Bolsover sat on the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire coalfield, and was a mining town for most of the 20th century until the closure of the Bolsover and Coalite plants.
The town now has around 11,000 residents, with the wider district covering a series of former pit villages β Shirebrook, Tibshelf, Pinxton, Whaley Thorns. Housing in Bolsover itself is mostly Victorian and early-20th-century terraces around the castle and high street, with newer estates spreading down the hill towards New Bolsover, the model village built for colliery workers in the 1890s.
