A short history of Hillsborough.
Hillsborough is a busy district in the north-west of Sheffield and home to one of England's most famous football grounds β the Sheffield Wednesday stadium, opened in 1899. The area grew up along the River Loxley and Don, with steel and grinding-wheel manufacture at its industrial peak. Hillsborough Park, donated to the city in 1890 by John Dixon Junior, remains a substantial public green space at the area's heart.
The district has its own identity, distinct from central Sheffield, with a thriving high street, the supertram terminus and a strong sense of community. Housing here is largely stone-built Victorian terraces in the older streets β Bradfield Road, Middlewood Road, Catch Bar Lane β with later semi-detached additions stretching up the hills towards Wadsley and Loxley.
