About Killamarsh

A short history of Killamarsh.

Killamarsh is a large village in north Derbyshire, immediately south of Sheffield's Beighton/Mosborough boundary. The village grew significantly during the 19th-century coal era β€” the Westthorpe and Norwood collieries dominated local employment until the 1980s closures. The Chesterfield Canal once ran through the village (its course can still be traced in places) and was an important route for moving coal to Yorkshire markets.

Killamarsh today has around 9,500 residents. Housing is mostly miners' terraces in the older streets, large post-war council estates, and modern detached developments around the edges. The village has good road links to both Sheffield and Chesterfield, with the M1 (junction 30) a couple of miles away.
