A short history of Catcliffe.
Catcliffe sits on the River Rother just south of Rotherham, and its most famous landmark is the Catcliffe glass cone β a 1740 brick cone that's the oldest surviving glass-furnace structure of its type in Western Europe, now a Grade I listed scheduled monument. The village grew around glass-making and later coal, with proximity to the Templeborough steelworks bringing further industrial employment through the 20th century.
Today Catcliffe has around 2,000 residents, sitting next to the M1 (junction 33) and Sheffield Parkway. Housing is mostly older village cottages, post-war semis along Brinsworth Road, and modern developments around the edges. The village has good links to both Rotherham and Sheffield, and the Magna Science Adventure Centre is a five-minute drive away.
